M33 - Conference paper at an international conference, printed in full
Organic compounds, heavy metals and other pollutants reach the soil, groundwater and surface water, then enter the human body through the food chain, representing a significant environmental and health problem. To develop sustainable and efficient methods for pollutant removal, increasing attention is being paid to the application of zeolites synthesised from industrial waste. Various industrial solid wastes are rich in silicates, crystalline and amorphous silicon, as well as aluminium, making them suitable raw materials for zeolite synthesis. Among the most commonly used waste materials are fly ash from coal, red mud, lithium and steel slag, coal tailings and other by-products of the metallurgical industry. This paper presents an overview of previous researches on the synthesis of zeolites from different types of industrial waste, with particular focus on the advantages and limitations of existing preparation procedures. The application of synthesised zeolites in gas purification, wastewater treatment and soil remediation is also analysed. The results of previous researches indicate the significant potential of these materials in environmental protection and the circular economy.
